Yes, I know Seussical closed two shows ago. It’s just that either we’re still Seussy in the shop or now I’m working in a circus. You see, the other day, we got a delivery. It was a big chair. No, no, I know what you’re thinking. But I MEAN a BIG CHAIR.

Just what we’re supposed to do with THIS, we don’t know. Um, something… We may be selling it on Ebay…
The same day, Emily helped us *ahem* clean the shop…

I think she was very very glad to see the back of this particular set. When she was done…

That’s the most exciting thing I’ve got right now. We go into focus and tech this coming week, and I’m pre-tired out for it. hussah. But! After that! BOSTON!!

Oh guys, why is sock yarn so much like crack? I can’t knit socks very fast yet (also I am lazy) but I CAN’T STOP BUYING! Clearly, I need therapy.
Just a drive by blogging here. Work is somehow exhausting me, even though I am working really slow on electrics, and the carpenters never give me tasks when I wander in. Not that I’m complaining, mind, but dang. I actually stepped forward and volunteered to attach approximately 11 million tons of clapboarding to the set tomorrow. Just for a change of pace. Boy, I hope it’s light.
Still trying to pick what I want to knit from White Lies Designs. should I take this, or this?

Work is being definitely odd this week. Last week, too, come to think of it. We seem to be being both very efficient and very unprepared. One show being installed on our mainstage, one in tech in our studio, and one on the road is keeping us pretty busy. Not to mention preparing for several other shows to boot. However I’ve still found time to keep plugging away on the sock, and to think about the next few projects. In fact, with all the riding around in trucks I did yesterday, I put on almost two whole inches, while at work! Poor me, huh?
Hmm, I did promise to talk about Knitting Rules by the Yarn Harlot, didn’t I. What to say? It’s as much fun to read as her blog is, that’s for damn sure. Several sections had me laughing so hard I had to stop reading for a while. I have to say that I agree with her about hats being better beginners projects than scarves. the finished-project payoff comes so much sooner that the buzz is enough to cement a real knitter firmly in the habit, instead of the miles of stockinette of a scarf. Scarves bore me to tears, honestly. But the book is definitely worth reading. The insert pages of top ten reasons are placed a little strangely mid-section, but I got around that by reading the section, and then going back to the insert. She’s got some pretty good basic recipes for hats and socks, too. I need to try her heel recipe- I’ve only mastered the short row heel thus far, and I feel like I need to expand my range.
Hmm… My reviews could use some work. Oh well.
I put in my vacation request today. It’s pretty much already approved so I’m not worried. Just a formality. but wow, am I ever looking forward to it. I’m going to boston to visit with my good friend and sometimes quest-mate Mookie. Who is awesome. I hope we get to hit some of the cool yarn stores I keep hearing about. I have also been promised amazing food and comic books. The week will culminate with Anime Boston, so I get the best of everything! I am already counting the days till the end of May.

Also pasta and garlic bread. Mmmm. Garlic bread. Today being my unexpected day off, I was presented with an opportunity to hang out with Hawk, Jamie, and Audrey. Three awesome people, if I may say so myself. After lunch in Chinatown (hand pulled noodles! Made by hand!) we drifted over towards the art galleries with the intention of finding the museum with the Hokusai exhibit. On the way, we passed the Hirshhorn, and detoured in to take in the Hiroshi Sugimoto photography exhibit. Wow. Just wow. Portraits of Henry VIII, interesting treatments of architecture and 1000 golden Buddhas later and I must admit being impressed.
We did find the Hokusai in the Sackler (alongside EVEN MORE work from Sugimoto!) and I could have stayed there for the rest of the day. My grandfather became a huge Hokusai fan when he was stationed in Japan, and I grew up with some reproductions of prints- including the Great Wave, of course. I absolutely adore his work, and I got to see a lot of things that I didn’t even know he’d done. His paintings! His how-to art books! His sketches! *drool* Someday I will have wall space and I will get to buy art, and when I do, Hokusai reproductions will definitely be on my list.
What? Huh? Do I even knit anymore? Well of course I do! Um, sorta. Wow have I been busy. Work is crazy right now and I’m usually too tired to do anything requireing the slightest amount of thinking after. However, There are socks! And swatches! See?!

my First Ever pair of socks. Made with Sundara Yarn hand dyed sock yarn in the Black Lagoon colorway. i learned much, and have ventured onward. The Socks That Rock sock is coming along. I’m using a pattern I came across… um…. somewhere online called Mata Hari.

I have frogged the leg twice because I couldn’t count. I have it this time! Honest! I think.
Also, here’s my felted swatch. It’s much flatter than it looks here, so I’m going to try to use another yarn. We shall see. but the cable part worked out really well!

Next time on My Scattered Mind, Review for the Yarn Harlot’s new book, and some Other Stuff.

I know, creative title, huh? I’m writing this from a mostly horizontal position (yay laptops!) due to the red-hot railroad spike that was driven between my shoulder blades over the course of the day today. Man, I swear, as long as it took me to get through today, it should be sometime tomorrow evening by now! Even though I have been having designer issues (I swear, why can’t designers count? How hard is that?) I managed to get some knitting in. I finished my VERY FIRST pair of socks!! I’ll have pics as soon as I get off this heating pad.
I have also decided what my sexy project shall be. I have decided to purchase this from White Lies Designs. I might have to go for one of the sweaters, too, but later. Mmm… sexy. I hope I can wear it to opening night of 100 dresses- it’s in mid May. Hey, I figure if I can do the Rogue in 16 days, I can do this, no problem!

There has been much talk lately of how busy we poor technicians must be. Usually a statement that comes right before “could you do me a favor?” It’s true. Every week for the past four I’ve been working on a new show. This week I’ve been working on three shows! I just got a delivery this morning, and I find that I have no idea what show it’s for. We have a strike, a tour, a hang, and a load in, all coming up in one week- pretty much within the same 7 day span. No wonder we’re all burning out. No. No we can’t do you a favor. No, I’m not sorry. Ta!
In other news, I’m looking for my Next Big Project. It’s starting to feel really odd that I don’t have more than socks on the needles. Although I am really enjoying the STR and my first short-row toe, I think I need something more substantial for my at-home knitting pleasure. (pleasure, obsession… it’s such a fine line, isn’t it?) So, in the spirit of spring, and to fight the rainy day outside, I started looking for sexy knitted tops. Something that will be both fun to wear on a Night Out but also will help stave off the over air conditioned atmosphere that seems to be so common anymore. I’m considering the somewhat-cowl, or maybe Candy. I dunno. Then throwing caution to the wind, I Googled “sexy knitting.” Not as full of porn as you’d think! Well, there’s this site which is closer than anything else. There’s also this site which looks like fun.
Of course, I ended up at White Lies Designs, and now I’m stuck. Do any of you have ideas or recommendations? I’m thinking something fun and sexy would be a good thing to hang onto- a lifeline for my sanity, if you will- to keep me sane during the next few weeks. I just have to keep thinking “Boston at the end of May. Boston at the end of May…’

Man, I wish the cast had kept their stomach bug to themselves. Although, high praise indeed to our actress (just one this show) for going back onstage after intermission, and out our intrepid and sorely underappreciated deck captain for holding the bucket. Fortunately I don’t get ill very easily- my stomach is just way too greedy to give up easily. I managed to make it till the afternoon, when I went home and had a nap. Hooray naps!
I also started in on the newly wound Socks That Rock yarn. I made my first short-row toe, and intend to do a feather-and-fan pattern with it. Not that I can go too quickly- I get woozy sitting up and being active for too long. Man, I’m hungry. Food sounds horrible. oog.
